Visa controls in the United States have tightened amid the Covid-19 pandemic and worsening US-China relations. Between May and September this year, Washington revoked more than 1000 visas for mainland Chinese students and academics on the ground od national security risks. And there has been significant drop in F1 visas - the most common type issued to overseas students - being granted to mainland Chinese. Fron January to July 2019, a third of all visas vent to people from mainland China, but in the same period this year it was just 9 per cent.
